Petition: Somerville Residents for a Fully Funded Library
(Co-sponsored by Mallory for Somerville and the Friends of Somerville Public Library NJ)
On July 22, the county confirmed what many of us feared: our Somerville library branch at 35 West End Avenue will close next week.
We know our Mayor and Borough Council care about this library too, and we are grateful for the good-faith effort already put into maintaining it under difficult conditions. Under our contract with the Somerset County Library System, the building is Somerville’s responsibility, which means our town leadership is uniquely positioned to lead the solution. We want to stand with them in that effort, and we believe residents showing up in support gives our elected officials the public backing to make this funding a priority for our town.
We are asking our Mayor and Council to join us in committing to:
-
Budgeting dedicated town funding for a permanent, properly maintained library space
-
Actively pursuing state and federal grants to be used for a Somerville library
-
Launching a public capital campaign so residents and businesses can contribute directly
-
Providing regular public updates on progress
Every signature will be counted and delivered directly to the Mayor and Borough Council.
Somerville can give this library the future it deserves. Add your name here to show our town that residents are standing with them to make it happen.
About Friends of the Somerville Public Library NJ: This petition is proud to be co-sponsored by the Friends of Somerville Public Library NJ, a volunteer group that supports our library through crucial fundraising, programming, and advocacy. Their commitment to this community is part of why our library has lasted as long as it has, and I am honored to stand with them on this effort.
We, the undersigned residents of Somerville, ask the Mayor and Borough Council to commit to: budgeting dedicated town funding for a permanent library space, actively pursuing state and federal grants, launching a public capital campaign, and providing regular updates on progress.
